Hiring Process

When applying for the position of police constable, applicants must complete and submit all required documentation before being invited into the selection process.

Paperwork Session

During the initial stages of selection, applicants may be invited in groups to attend a police district to complete pre-interview paperwork and various forms.

The paperwork submitted will be reviewed and evaluated by recruiting officers. Candidates best meeting the needs of York Regional Police will be invited to complete a pre-background questionnaire.

Candidates should allow one to three hours to complete the paperwork session.

Pre-Background Questionnaire

Candidates meeting criteria may be invited to complete an extensive pre-background questionnaire session.

Following the completion of the questionnaire, applicants may be invited to an interview with York Regional Police.

Candidates should allow roughly two hours to complete this stage.

Interview

Applicants will be required to provide the following documents at the time of their interview:

Interviewed candidates are expected to have knowledge of York Regional Police and the Region of York. Candidates will be required to articulate their life experience, skills and abilities. Applicants will be assessed based on the following developmental and essential competencies:

Successful applicants in the interview phase will be subject to a police background investigation.

Police Background Investigation

Applicants successful in the interview phase may be subject to a comprehensive police background investigation. The background investigation will include the verification of information provided by the applicant, as well as any additional information received from the applicant during the selection process.

Security checks and reference checks will be conducted during this phase.

Psychological Evaluation

All police constable applicants are required to undergo a psychological evaluation to assess an applicant's suitability.

Communications and Driving Assessment

Candidates will be required to complete both a communications and driving assessment.

Home Visit

Background officers will conduct both a home and place of employment visit for each candidate. The officer will produce a comprehensive report detailing the background investigation to be submitted to the Chief of Police for final review.

Please note, background investigations typically take two to six weeks to complete, though investigations may take longer depending on circumstances.

Conditional Offer

Applicants approved by the chief and deemed most competitive may be extended a Conditional Offer of Employment.
